The Early Days – Adrienne Cowan
Day One for me in Queen Boudicca camp was incredible. Bob Schlink, the composer, has a way of describing his vision for the opera that is entirely compelling and inspiring—it would be an opera that pushes limits, breaks pre-conceived notions, opens the metal world up to a greater audience, uses guttural vocals and war horns and drums and ancient instruments live, and paves the way for massive-scale theatrical metal productions in the future.
With theatre illustrating my past and metal burning in my heart, it was a perfect match for what I want to do with my time right after finishing at Berklee.
After much back and forth between the two of us and our individual connections, a dream team of local metal scene stars came together to help bring the idea to life on the stage, under the instruction of our director, Carol Schlink. Some names you may recognize—of course, the Seven Spires guys have joined me as part of the Opera’s band, along with Jose Aranda, who you might know from YouTube as Joe Atlan, the keytar shred guy. Jennifer Kim, or Jenn PK (also from YouTube as a singer/violist), is also part of the cast, as is Haydee Irizarry from the New England melodic death metal band Aversed, David Benites from the metalcore outfit Buried Electric, and Cameron Earnshaw of progressive metal acts Emissivity, Episodes, and other vocal feature fames. Last but not least, Ava Gaudet, Bob’s daughter, will be joining us later for rehearsals as Queen Boudicca herself.
More insights coming your way from myself and maybe some of my castmates. In the meantime, check out some of our behind-the-scenes videos here!
